‘Need For Speed’ Film Looks To Add Dominic Cooper

By Dale Lavine

After over a decade’s worth of films, they have finally decided to reboot long running car franchise “The Fast and the Furious”. Kind of. ‘Need For Speed’ is another racing franchise that got its start in 1994. After some odd eighteen games, Scott Waugh (Act of Valor) has taken helm to direct the film version of the franchise – and Variety is reporting that Dominic Cooper (The Devil’s Double) is being eyed for a key role in the film.

From current understanding, the film will star Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad) as a recently freed-from-prison racer, and Imogen Poots (28 Weeks Later) as a person that connects the wealthy with high-end vehicles to race with. Dominic Cooper is said to be eyeing the role of a self-made – but well-known – man in the world of car upgrades. The Need For Speed franchise has always been one dedicated to racing and customization, and the film is expected to take on that very image of the series rather than that of one image.

So why all the fuss about car movies? It’s been done before, and the genre has been so beaten into the ground that we’ve all come to expect the same drab storyline out of these greasy muscle-car action-packed racing thrillers: Man likes cars, man gets in trouble, man wants revenge, man gets revenge, man comes back for sequel to repeat the same steps over again. It’s a very “lather, rinse, repeat” process, and one wonders what the benefit of it all might be – if there even is any benefit.

The creative spark in Hollywood has been especially lackluster, with remakes of remakes happening every few years (there’s even been talk of remaking the Twilight series, which frustrates me to the point of no words). The criminal-racing movie has been done before, and it seems now as though the executives just want to hash out the same fastness and furiousness in ‘Need For Speed’ as they have with the last six Fast & Furious movies…just with a different set of actors.
