Brace yourselves, because winter is coming.  And if you live in the Northern US, chances are your winter is cold, snowy, and far too long.  So what winter travel destinations can you go to to escape the snow and long nights?  South America travel is one option: South America is close, warm, inexpensive, and contains everything from ancient history to sunny beaches.  Best of all, most of it is either in the tropical zone or in the Southern Hemisphere, meaning your frosty January is their steamy summer.  What better winter travel destination could you ever imagine? Here are a few of the best spots for South America travel this winter for every travel budget and taste.

Best Winter Travel Destinations in South America:

Party in Brazil

World famous for Carnival in late February/early March, the largest country in South America has a veritable plethora of beach and party options. Even if you can’t make it to Carnival, the beaches in the north are great year-round, while the beaches in the south are in their prime in the North American winter months.  And Rio de Janeiro is always an interesting, intense experience.

Hike in Peru

For those who enjoy a little more adventure in their lives, the famed Inca Trail wanders through the jungles of Peru before finishing at the mythical mountain city of legend, Machu Picchu.  The downside is that the Inca Trail is very expensive, as you must hire a guide and take along all the supplies you need for the multi-day trek, as well as purchase a trek permit.  There are different options, from a grueling 7-day hike to the milder 2-day walk. All guided hiking options end in Machu Picchu.  If you’re not up for a hike through the jungle, but still want to see the city, you can take a bus/train combination from the ancient city of Cusco and see Machu Picchu in one convenient day trip.

Adventures on a Budget in Bolivia

High in the mountains, the Bolivian capital of La Paz is unique. Still very traditional, with a very strong native culture, Bolivia is a beautiful land of contrasts. And it’s one of the most inexpensive countries in South America, so if you’re on a budget, it’s a fantastic destination with no shortage of excitement. You’ll feel like you’re in another world, and that’s why Bolivia tops the list of the best winter travel destinations in South America.
